According to new research by global engagement company Reward Gateway, 73% of employees agree that employers could be better motivators in the workplace.
The study of more than 2,000 UK employees revealed that the less motivated a staff member feels, the more likely they see their salary as a key motivator. Of those lacking motivation in their current roles, 41% said they are motivated by wages. Other motivators included good working relationships (37%) and having a sense of purpose (21%).
By comparison, the majority of respondents who classed themselves as extremely motivated in their current roles are motivated by job satisfaction (52%). Feeling respected (37%), having a purpose (37%) and good working relationships (37%) were also cited as key motivators by this group.
Unsurprisingly, a lack of motivation can have a negative impact on employees and employers. The study found that the most common effects are a worsening mood (60%), drop in productivity levels (48%), decline in mental health (46%), decrease in quality of work (40%), and a poor diet (28%).
In addition, 26% say their relationships with friends and family suffer, while 20% drink more alcohol when they feel unmotivated.
However, respondents suggested they would stay in a job for 11 months even when they do feel unmotivated, meaning both workplace productivity and their overall wellbeing suffers.
Speaking about the findings, Rob Boland Reward Gateway's group director of products and client success explained: "It's clear that employers can be doing more to motivate and engage their people in the right way."
He continued: "The companies driving the greatest commercial results are the best at addressing employee motivation."
Businesses need to focus on recognising employees' successes, communicating openly and honestly, and gathering employee feedback to improve and adapt their engagement strategies.
