The latest annual Marketing Week Career and Salary survey has revealed the best (and worst) paid sectors for marketers in 2019. Coming out on top is consumer electronics, with an average salary of £63,949, followed by FMCG (£58,324) and the automotive sector (£57,597).
At the other end of the scale is the charity sector. Paying an average wage of £42,014 it is joined by the public sector and construction – averaging £43,750 and £43,937 respectively.
The survey also confirmed the ongoing gender pay gap within marketing. While men earn an average of £54,487 across all sectors, women's average earnings are considerably less at £41,587.
The data also revealed average wage differences in terms of workplace hierarchy. Those figures came in at £23,594 for marketing assistants, £26,539 for marketing executives, and £31,767 for senior executives. Moving up the workforce ranks, managers earn an average of £42,503, senior managers £56,585, and directors take home an average of £97,745.
The findings also revealed that receiving fair financial rewards is very important to marketers. However, while 68.3% of female marketers agree, just 8.3% believe their employers do a good job of delivering such rewards (for male marketers this division was 66.2% versus 10.9%).
It's a similar picture when it comes to performance review structures. Just over a quarter 27% of male marketers think they are very important, but just 7.5% feel their company are doing them well (33.5% versus 9.9% for female marketing professionals).
