Mental Health Awareness Week (12-18 May 2025) is a moment to pause, reflect, and reconnect—with ourselves, and with each other. This year’s theme, community, could not be more timely. In a recruitment landscape that often feels fast, competitive and overwhelming, community might just be the most powerful asset we have.

Why Community Matters More Than Ever

The recruitment industry, particularly in marketing, digital, and creative fields, is built on people. It’s about connections, trust, and finding the right match—not just for a role, but for a team and a workplace where someone can add to the culture and help it grow. Job seekers face ghosting, imposter syndrome, and uncertainty. Hiring teams feel the pressure to make perfect choices under imperfect conditions. And both sides can find themselves wondering: Am I the only one struggling?

Community reminds us we’re not alone.

The Mental Health-Recruitment Link

Work is a huge part of our identity. So, when something goes wrong—redundancy, rejection, workplace stress—it impacts our wellbeing. That’s where community steps in.

When candidates feel supported, not just processed, they gain confidence. When employers have trusted partners to guide them, their decisions improve. When recruiters offer more than placements—when they offer perspective, empathy, and encouragement—they can change lives.

At Stopgap, we believe recruitment isn’t just transactional—it’s transformational.

“As a recruiter, I get to speak to many people by learning about their struggles in finding a job and what drives them. I can help them navigate their CV changes, interview techniques and job search strategy, but the important thing is to get to know them and their needs. I often recommend networking in person, since you will find joy in meeting people who love the same subjects!” – Amanda McCarthy, Stopgap Consultant

The Current Landscape: Mental Health in UK Workplaces

Recent studies paint a concerning picture:

  • 85% of UK workers have experienced symptoms of burnout and exhaustion due to work-related stress, with nearly half having taken time off for mental health reasons. The Times
  • Mental health issues cost UK employers approximately £56 billion annually, encompassing absenteeism, presenteeism, and staff turnover. Spill - Mental Health Support
  • 61% of UK employees who left a job in the last year or plan to leave in the next 12 months cited poor mental health as a factor. Spill

These statistics underscore the urgent need for supportive communities within workplaces, especially in sectors where creativity and innovation are paramount.

The Role of Community in Recruitment

At Stopgap, we believe that recruitment transcends the transactional. It's about building relationships, understanding individual journeys, and fostering environments where both candidates and clients feel seen, heard, and valued.

Yet, in today’s digital-first job market, the process can often feel impersonal—especially for candidates who never hear back after applying, or who navigate the journey entirely online. Many senior professionals tell us that searching for work can feel incredibly isolating, with little to no interaction from recruiters or employers. That’s not the kind of experience we believe in.

We know the job hunt can be tough—especially when it feels like no one is listening. That’s why we’re committed to engaging meaningfully with as many relevant candidates as we can. Speaking with someone who understands your challenges and ambitions can make all the difference.

And it doesn’t stop there. We encourage our clients to interact more directly with applicants too. A few minutes of human connection—an email, a conversation, some feedback—can help restore confidence and build community in what can otherwise be a very solitary process.

Building Better Communities:

For Candidates:

  1. Seek Support Networks: Engage with professional groups, online forums, or local meetups in your industry.
  2. Open Dialogue: Communicate your needs and preferences during the recruitment process to ensure alignment with potential employers.
  3. Prioritise Well-being: Recognise signs of burnout and seek assistance when needed.
  4. Continuous Learning: Invest in personal and professional development to build confidence and adaptability.

For Hiring Managers and Organisations:

  1. Cultivate Inclusive Cultures: Implement policies that support diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  2. Provide Mental Health Resources: Offer access to counselling services, workshops, and wellness programs.
  3. Encourage Open Communication: Create safe spaces for employees to share concerns without fear of stigma.
  4. Lead by Example: Demonstrate commitment to mental well-being through leadership actions and decisions.

The Ripple Effect: Beyond the Workplace

Fostering a sense of community doesn't just benefit individual well-being; it enhances team cohesion, drives innovation, and contributes to overall organisational success. In an era where remote work and digital interactions are prevalent, intentional efforts to build and maintain community are more crucial than ever.

Final Thoughts: Embracing the Power of Community

Mental health is not a solitary journey. By embracing the power of community, we can create environments where individuals thrive, organisations flourish, and the recruitment process becomes a catalyst for positive change.

“Being part of a safe, positive community is vital for our mental health and wellbeing. We thrive when we have strong connections with other people and supportive communities that remind us, we are not alone. Communities can provide a sense of belonging, safety, support in hard times, and give us a sense purpose. “ - Amanda McCarthy, Stopgap Consultant
