How long have you been working at Stopgap?

Just over 3 years!

And what was your career path to becoming a recruiter?

I had an incredibly rewarding 18 years in marketing across different sectors (professional body, post-graduate education and telecoms to name a few), both B2B and B2C, where I had the opportunity to travel the word, relocate to Sydney for 6 months, and work with some inspirational people. Most of my career was spent working for international companies located in Amsterdam, and when I came back to the UK I wanted to do something different that actually made a real difference to people. The recruiter who placed me in my final marketing role suggested that I may be good at recruiting, so I did some research and came across Stopgap's website and I was immediately sold by their approach to recruiting and workplace culture. And the rest is history!

What areas or sector do you work on at Stopgap?

I specialise in marketing roles across all disciplines from entry level to senior management (up to £70,000) within the property, professional services and business services sectors.

What do you enjoy about working as a consultant?

Helping people navigate the job market, understanding their key strengths as marketers and securing them their ideal career move.

And what is special or interesting about working at Stopgap specifically?

We really do care about people and develop career-long relationships with marketers.

What's your fondest or funniest memory of Stopgap?

Bringing Maggie, my pug, into the office and laughing helplessly when she stole an intimate garment from one of my colleagues' bags and ran around the office with it. The harder we tried to get it the more she thought it was a game! There is a reason I don't bring her in anymore, but I love being in a working environment where "well-behaved" dogs are welcome.

Do you have 3 things you've learned about recruitment during your time as a consultant

Not all recruiters engage in bad practices. Some genuinely want to help you. Sometimes recruiters struggle to get feedback from companies too; it's not for the want of trying. Being a recruiter is not one dimensional; good recruiters are career coaches, advisors, mentors, confidants, good listeners, partners all rolled into one.

If you could sum Stopgap up in 3 words what would they be?

Caring, experts, genuine.
