5 things Tennis taught me about Recruitment

Posted: 27 Sep 2017

Our keen Tennis-playing Lead Consultant Christine Ebeling-Long shares her insights on how Tennis can teach us lessons that can be used in recruitment.

Here I am thinking about the weekend and looking forward to an upcoming tennis match with some friends.  I know it will be competitive, fast paced and test my mettle as my competition is really a level above me (as much as I hate to admit it).  Nevertheless, I know on a good day I can beat them and even on a bad day I will enjoy myself no matter how frustrating it is to lose.

This started me thinking about the world of recruitment and wondering if there are any lessons I can take across from tennis into my day to day work-life and – guess what – there are!

1. Don't assume you know everything about your opponent

In this case you can transpose the word "opponent" for the "client" or the "candidate".  The more you know about both the better chance you have of filling the role with the right candidate and ensuring a successful win for you and your Client.

2. You will always have good days and bad days

Sometimes, no matter how hard you work or how hard you try, things just don't go your way.  The important thing in sport, work and life is not to give up, work out what you could have done better or differently and if the answer is nothing, accept your fate and move on.  A positive, forward-thinking outlook counts for a lot.

3. A win always makes you feel good

There's nothing like a win – and the great feeling you get from a happy candidate and a satisfied client is unbeatable (which is what drives us here at Stopgap).

4. No matter how good you think you are there is always more to learn

Even when you have been successful and found the perfect candidate for your client, don't forget to review what you did well and what you could have done better to ensure you're ready for next time.

5. Champions continue to win

Now, don't get me wrong, I am not a champion as much as I would like to be but what I do know is that whether you're Roger Federer or Andy Murray or simple Christine at Stopgap - winning one match is never enough, you want to win another, then another, then a grand slam or two, and then one day, hopefully, become No. 1.

If you need help with marketing recruitment whether you're a client or an experienced candidate, we at Stopgap will endeavour to hit an 'Ace' in filling any role or finding the best available job for you.
